This page contains Sankey diagrams displaying the bright and blind spots volume of water research based on country groups. The predicted volume of research based on study locations and research topics from the topic model were used to create these diagrams. The width of the countries, topics, and lines are proportional to the predicted composition. In other words, the thicker the line, the more research there is related to that country and topic.

Our findings are based on water research and are not inclusive of research outside the scope of water-related research. In addition, there is a large blind spot in the Caribbean countries so we chose to not graphically represent the little research there is because it may be misleading.

Bright Spots

This diagram represents areas of water research that have been thoroughly researched. It shows us the volume of water research in Latin American and Caribbean countries (LAC) based on location and the top 25% of studied topics. On the left, countries are identified individually and by the color of their associated socio-hydrologic group. On the right, specific topics are listed. The width of the countries, topics, and lines are proportional to the predicted composition. For example, Brazil makes up the largest volume of water research in LAC, so it has the widest lines. On the other hand, Argentina makes up a smaller proportion of the water research, so it has thinner lines.

Blind Spots

The blind spots diagram represents areas of water research that have been studied relatively less and could benefit from further research. It displays the volume of water research in LAC based on location and the bottom 25% of studied topics. On the left, countries are identified individually and by the color of their associated socio-hydrologic group. On the right, the specific topics are listed. The width of the countries, topics, and lines are proportional to the predicted composition. In other words, the thinner the line, the less research there is that corresponds to that country and topic. Note the topics that have not been researched (in relation to water research) by countries are not represented in this diagram. We include these topics in the individual Group 1, 2, or 3 tabs above.
